Happy Feet!!! That’s what comes to mind when I walk into the newest shop on the square in Downtown Winchester, Tennessee. And if I’m being perfectly honest with you, I also think Happy Body, Happy Belly, Happy Spirit, and Happy Heart. That’s because The Sole Shop, LLC isn’t just about feet even though they have you more than supported with the best arches within walking, running, or hiking distance. They have something for just about every body [part] and everybody. Natalie Guess, who is a Franklin County native, opened this psychedelic shop for the soles (and soul) in April of 2019.
I’ve known this lovely lady since we parked beside each other in high school. We got lucky with spots under a tree and right by the exit. She was always that gal who stood her ground and up for you if need be. She has the highest morals and biggest heart around. When I learned she was opening a store, I might have busted a few drive-bys and window peeps in anticipation of her big opening day. Then when I walked into her doors for the first time, I saw Natalie all over the place. Yes, she was busy tending to her many customers which had her actually all over the place, but I also saw her in every item in her store. Her spirit lives there, you can tell when you walk in as the smell of coffee and leather gives you a hug. And we’re not talking about just any coffee. She’s got Death Wish Coffee, the strongest coffee in the world!
Local with a Smile
Natalie and her staff are so friendly and inviting that it makes you want to stay and hang out. And you can! They are so dedicated to customer service that they encourage you to shop and chill at your own pace. Once you see all the many treasures inside, you will know why this is a benefit in itself. Everyone needs shoes and they want to help you find the right pair to take you wherever your path leads. They’ve given us locals the benefit of touching, feeling, and trying on those boots or sandals you used to have to get online. Now you can try them on and take a little stroll around the store to make sure they are the perfect fit. This, my friends, is what shopping local is all about. It’s a win/win for everyone!
Empire Records Culture
Natalie has given a lot of thought into what she wants The Sole Shop to be for her customers. A huge chunk of her inspiration for the culture she’s trying to build comes from the movie Empire Records. Watching it is even a prerequisite for working there. Since I fully appreciate that kind of onboarding process, I watched it (again). Her vision is to make The Sole Shop a fun place where you can “embrace yourself and find something to wave your freak flag high and proud”. Fun fact: they have quarters glued to the floor as a nod to the movie. Welcoming you is a team who works together, has each other’s back and yours, and has so much fun. This is a funky safe space where you can be yourself. After all, this is your store.
The Sole Shop is brimming with so many unique treasures that it is impossible to name them all. Plus, it grows and changes every day so the best way to fully learn and appreciate what they have is to go take a look for yourself, and then go back again, and again. Here’s a little peek at what you can find there.
Now, I cannot talk about the products at The Sole Shop and not mention Natalie’s favorite item which also happens to be my favorite item: Band Tees!!! When I say you’re gonna want ample time to sift through her stuff, this is why I say that. They greet you as soon as you walk in the door. They are located on rounders by the front window and overlooking the store displayed proudly from above…as they should be. Delete all preconceived notions you may have and just dig in. There is an impressive sampling embracing multiple genres and eras. When I see Jimi Hendrix hanging out beside Lynyrd Skynyrd, Run DMC, and Tupac; I know I’ve found my music merch mecca. She’s even got the good ole boys: Willie, Waylon, Hank, and Johnny. One of Natalie’s favorite moments is when a customer discovers that thing they can’t live without. You are sure to experience that magical moment here.
It’s in the name, so of course, you’re going to find all the shoes for all the occasions. Natalie is not afraid of hard work and she is dedicated to serving those who share her work ethic. The selection of work boots is near and dear to her heart. Thorogood boots get the job done without breaking the bank or sacrificing quality. Keen Footwear makes shoes that make a difference and it’s called The Keen Effect.
All work and no play makes for a dull day. So to create that important balance, there is a super trendy selection of luxurious sandals and shoes. Rainbow Sandals are comfortable, hand made, and high quality so they won’t fall apart on you to be discarded in the sand. The boho chic Minnetonka moccasin style footwear focuses on craftsmanship with a unique style. Coconuts By Matisse is a contemporary collection offering attitude, edge, and casual beauty. Chacos are ready for you and the adventures that take you in the water, on the trails, and everywhere else. Sanuks are unconventional yet widely popular and fun shoes determined to make you smile.
The pullover started in Baja California, designed by Senor Lopez, and knitted in Mexico out of recycled materials including organic cotton and hemp. Ranging in sizes from 2T to 3XL. You can outfit your whole family in these warm and breathable threads.
Disc golf is gliding through Tennessee and is fun for the whole family regardless of age or ability. They provide absolutely everything you need to play Disc Golf, and The Sole Shop has a pretty impressive selection right at your fingertips. Fun Fact: If they had to choose one word to describe the flight of a Frisbee, they would pick “gliding”. I know this because I asked them personally, and they were super friendly enough to supply us with an answer!
A family ran local gourmet tea company blending nature’s blessings straight from the garden, farm, forest, and briar patch in Huntsville, Alabama.
